Giving Manufacturers an Edge

The thought of putting robots into the workplace once led to heated debates and quite a bit of controversy. This was not because of science-fiction fantasies about robots gone bad, but rather, because robots posed a real threat to the human workers that they were rapidly replacing. Robots are capable of doing complex jobs over and over without a break and without making mistakes. In certain tasks, they can simply outperform their human counterparts. This is especially true in applications such as welding and painting. It is not only safer for robots to perform these duties; they perform them faster and with fewer errors.

The use of robots in welding applications really highlights the usefulness of these machines. There are basically two different types of industrial robots used for welding. There are rectilinear robots and articulating robots. Articulating robots actually resemble a human arm since they have rotating joints that allow them to move around quickly and efficiently.
Rectilinear robots are not nearly as flexible as articulating robots are but, nonetheless, quite practical for certain applications. What these two types of robots bring to the table is consistency. Welding robots, and all robots for that matter, are able to perform a task over and over and deliver consistently excellent results.

Another benefit that robots bring to the workplace is the fact that they are capable of working 24 hours a day seven days a week without a need for breaks, sleep, or vacation. Although they do require occasional maintenance, industrial robots are designed to be durable and provide years of service. Even though robots are used in a variety of applications in a number of different industries, welding and painting jobs are the most common assignments given to these machines. The fumes from painting and the sparks from welding can be very dangerous to human workers.

Robots have been used in the automotive industry for years and the use of these machines has sped up production while lowering production costs. This has made it possible for automotive manufacturers in particular to build better products without drastically raising the prices for these products. A similar trend can be seen throughout all industries that have put robots to use for them. With more consistent results, the ability to produce quality results faster and more consistently than humans, and the reduced risk of injury to human workers, it is easy to see why robots have become a staple of the high-tech world.
